Blind leading the blindater
Boarding performance, june 16, 2011
IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST:: Blind leading the blind explores morality in relation to class and ideology. The performance took place in a room resembling a derelict clinical space 'a institutional torture room'.A video clip of the royal wedding* was projected on the back wall. Small TV placed on a wheel trolley played a BBC interview with a young gang from Manchester* . Exploring how a mix of threats and actual violence maintains and re-enforces lifestyles from queens to chavs
* The royal wedding piece was named Ratstar. The name of a squatted social centre in camberwell that was raided by police before the royal wedding and the occupants held in jail for the weekend. The reason the police gave for the raid was searching for stolen goods. There were no stolen goods in the property and no reason to hold those arrested.
*The TV video a BBC interview features a gang called the benchill mad dogs. One member of this gang 'ryan' was photographed making a gun gesture behind David Cameron. This image made front page news in the UK.
*The main performance and focus the water boarding performance for me symbolises the ultimate form of institutionalized torture combination of physical and mental torture that leaves no visible damage.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE ARTIST :I am an anarchist artist working in south London. I try to reconcile my hatred of capitalism with my understanding of how to get by in a capitalist society. Having to accept my own hypocritical position being a critic of power structures and rules we are forced to live by and having to live by them. This understanding and complexity i try to take into my artwork work. Personally i openly advocate insurrection and revolution as a tool to liberate humanity while understanding that this statement is totally invalid without detailed explanation.I wish an end to oppression ,exploitation and suffering without knowing how this could be achieved.
so i use art as a field to explore the power structures that exist and how violence is used by governments and revolutionaries to truly understand the forces that govern our modern world.looking at violence as a force for destabilization and change as well as a force to enforce and maintain power. In my work the physical act is the focus but the psychological response from the audience and the participants is as much a part of the artwork.
Mixing reality and imaginary, fact and fiction to replicate the way ideology and fundamentalism motivate and justify the acts perpetrated terrorists and politicians!
