We were camping a couple of weeks ago at Montaña de Oro State Park which is just south of Morro Bay in California. The tide pools, from a distance are beautiful.

As you get close to the water you realize that oil has covered quite a bit of the rocks in the tide pools.

I have no idea when the oil had spilled into these tidepools. I have done an Internet search but nothing concrete pops up. There was the large Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969 and the oil spill in the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes. Whatever the cause the damage is still strongly visible in the tidepools.

It's natural tar from local seeps. There's lots on the beach at Morro bay so watch where you walk!
