Ever since Vietnam we struggle with low tolerance for solders killed or injured. I don’t like the word "casualties" as it seems like a euphemism – and way too "casual." The Afghanistans have a different regard for the war and have no time frame. We were in the Vietnam swamp, for sixteen years. We’ve got eight into the Afghanistan wasteland. At some point, eventually there will be stability in Afghanistan. That kind of dilutes the whole notion of war because of its disabling factor. Check out Vietnam. One of my right-winged friends said, "But look what we have done in Iraq?" And my answer is: "The only winner, so far, is General Petraeus." I’ve been asked what, "The canary is always left in the mine," means. I have no idea what it means. But my grandfather, a miner, used to say it all the time.
